May 24, 2018 - Impact Through Involvement, Member Spotlight
Impact Austin members are special women who are using their talents, education, passion, and energy to change their neighborhoods, towns, and even the nation. Val Kirk is one of those women who will be making a difference at a national level as she joins the Board of Directors of the Women’s Collective Giving Grantmakers Network (WCGN). She will join the WCGN board as Treasurer in July.
Val Kirk has over thirty-five years of experience in both finance and law with a degree in both. She practiced law for twenty-six years, serving as managing partner for twelve of those years before retiring in 2017. Val is a passionate advocate for the collective giving model having seen its impact in Austin, Texas. She was a member of the Impact Austin board for seven years, serving several of them as Treasurer. Currently, she is the Financial Administrator and sits on the board Finance Committee and the Committee Cabinet.
Val and her fellow member and friend, Val Meddaugh co-chaired the original grant finance committee which supports grant review committees by reviewing potential grantee financial statements, and she served Impact Austin in that capacity for four years. She has also served on the Board finance, audit, governance, strategic planning and personnel committees as chair or as a member. Val’s other community involvements include serving ten years as treasurer for The Texas Advocacy Project (formerly the Women’s Advocacy Project) and as Treasurer of the Travis County Women Lawyer’s Foundation for four years.
We asked her how she learned about WCGN and what drew her to service with the organization. “I first learned about WCGN when Austin hosted their annual conference,” she said, “And then discovered more when I attended the conference in Charlotte, North Carolina a few years ago.”
In her spare time, Val likes to travel. But not just anywhere…The Galapagos Islands, Antarctica, Brazil, Argentina, Turkey, Iceland, China, Cuba, and multiple trips to Oxford, England where her son, daughter-in-law and precious grandchildren live.
This past year, Val decided it was the “Year of YES!” She traveled to Australia; Kenya; Tanzania; Bordeaux, France; (In addition to five trips to Oxford!).
Next year? Russia, New Zealand and at least four more trips to Oxford are in the plans, but you never know where this world-wandering woman will turn up. Wherever she goes, we feel certain she will be making an impact!
