Any Baby Can

Project Title:

Nurse-Family Partnership®

Project Description:

Each year in Central Texas, one in three women receive no or late prenatal care, leading to health problems for both mother and child. Any Baby Can’s Nurse-Family Partnership® enrolls first-time moms before the 28th week of gestation and serves them through their child’s second birthday. This long-term, free health service provides information, support and counseling, while enhancing prenatal care, focusing on the child’s development and mother’s growth.

This grant will allow Any Baby Can’s Nurse-Family Partnership® to serve more families through this evidence-based program with proven results.

Grant Status:

Any Baby Can exceeded its goal for the grant period and served 530 women and children, mostly in Travis and Williamson counties. Deliverables included:

  • 176 service hours per Nurse Home Visitor

  • The project exceeded national NFP goals with these results (99% of mothers received prenatal care, 98% initiated breastfeeding, and 94% of infants maintained current immunization status)

  • Only birthweight fell below national Nurse-Family Partnership standards, with 11% (vs 10% goal) low birth babies.

Longitudinal studies of the NFP program show significant long term impacts in the lives of children and families:

  • 48% reduction in child abuse and neglect

  • 56% reduction of emergency room visits for accidents and poisonings

  • 72% fewer convictions of mothers

  • 59% percent reduction in arrests among children whose mothers were enrolled in NFP

  • 67% percent reduction in behavioral and intellectual problems among children
