Mentoring through Music
Description:
Kids in a New Groove (KING) provides Central Texas youth in foster care with free music lessons through mentorship. KING seeks to improve the challenging statistics for youth aging out of foster care, where many children face homelessness or incarceration due to lack of community resources. For the past five years, 100% of Kids In A New Groove students have graduated high school, compared to less than 50% nationwide.
KING will use this grant to prioritize recruitment and retention of students and music mentors in the Austin area to ensure continued success of current programming.
Grant Status:
Kids In A New Groove (KING) was acquired by Partnerships for Children in 2021, whereupon this program was operated as KING Mentoring. No grant outcomes video was produced by Impact Austin in light of this transition.
Our 2020 Education Secondary Grant was unrestricted. Funding supported the Music Mentorship program as it pivoted to virtual lessons during the pandemic. KING recruited 30 new students in Georgetown, Manor, and San Marcos, plus 40 music mentors.
