Con Mi MADRE
Project Title:
Lifting Latinos out of Poverty through Education
Project Description:
Con Mi MADRE is a two-generation organization that empowers young Latinas and their mothers through education and support services that increase preparedness, participation, and success in post-secondary education. Con Mi MADRE translates to ‘with my mother,’ which exemplifies a unique programming element -- the organization intentionally engages mothers in their daughter's educational journey from 6th grade through college graduation. Con Mi MADRE contributes to increasing college completion rates among Latina youth and decreasing the cycle of poverty.
With support from Impact Austin, Con Mi MADRE will reach an additional 180 mother-daughter teams in Central Texas.
Grant Status:
Con Mi MADRE was forced to adapt plans for our $100,000 Community Grant during the COVID-19 pandemic. Even so, Con Mi MADRE served 418 students in grades 6-12, 409 mothers, and 50 college students. They provided 14 group meetings for students in grades 6-12 and three virtual college academies and one weeklong college fair through #Collegeforall.
The students achieved the following:
18 scholarships to H.S. seniors and college students
59% earned GPAs of 3.0 or higher
78% enrolled in advanced or dual-credit courses
83% were planning their futures after high school
58% were setting goals and achieving them
COVID pivots included:
Virtual programming. In-person college visits also went virtual.
Support and resources offered to some participants affected by COVID and by winter storms
Some Impact Austin grant funds were converted to salaries and travel.
