Friends of the Children Austin

Title:
Friends Austin Literacy and Educational Equity
Description:
The mission of Friends of the Children Austin is "Impacting generational change by empowering youth, who are facing the greatest obstacles, through relationships with professional mentors – 12+ years, no matter what."
The Impact Austin grant will provide 67% of funding for the Friends Austin Literacy and Educational Equity initiative. The initiative will have two key components: a summer intervention called Book Camp; and a year-round Education Program Manager who will also oversee Book Camp. The goal is to help ensure children in the program are reading at grade level.
The initiative will:
Counteract three key risk factors associated with poverty: early parenting, incomplete education, and involvement in the juvenile justice system
Utilize trained bilingual tutors for Book Camp, who work individually and consistently with children on their specific literacy needs
Grant Status:
The Impact Austin grant supported the hire of a full-time Literacy Project Manager whose focus would ensure that children in the program read at grade level. At any given time, about 200 children are paired with Friends, with approximately 30 joining each year.
