Ecology Action of Texas

Organization:

Ecology Action of Texas

Ecology Action of Texas

Project Title:

Guerrero Park Community Stewards

Project Description:

Ecology Action of Texas has spent 45 years recycling and processing materials. Sixteen years ago, it began reclaiming an abandoned landfill in Montopolis. For the past six years, it has focused on transforming this site into a nature preserve, with the vision of expanding restoration learning opportunities into a comprehensive on-site environmental education program.

The grant is unrestricted and awarded in support of the mission and programs of Ecology Action of Texas.

Grant Status:

Since its founding in 1969, Ecology Action has been committed to the mission of landfill diversion and zero waste awareness in Austin and the surrounding region. Circle Acres is Ecology Action's first experiment in recycling an abandoned landfill in Montopolis into an ecological safe haven and a community resource.

Impact Austin’s Education Grant was unrestricted and awarded to support the mission and programs of Ecology Action of Texas. Ecology Action maximized the grant in various ways:

  • hiring a part-time Admin/Communication specialist;

  • construction costs for Phase One of their outdoor classroom project; and

  • staff/program expenses to lead volunteer management of their forestry initiative in Guerrero Park.

In 12 months, Ecology Action hosted 5,000 volunteers for approximately 14,000 volunteer hours and 120 students in a pilot summer camp.
