Black Mamas ATX

Black Mamas ATX

Project Title:

Black Mamas REACH Manor

Project Description:

Collaborative: Black Mamas ATX, People’s Community Clinic, Austin Regional Clinic, Manor ISD

Black Mamas ATX’s mission is to ensure that Black women survive and thrive before, during and after childbirth with the goal of reducing maternal mortality and morbidity rates among Black mothers in Central Texas.

Black Mamas REACH (Racial Equity and Access for Collaborative Healthcare) Manor will bring Black Mamas programming to Manor, which has one of the highest Black populations in Central Texas but currently has no OB/GYN clinics. This program will provide support groups, doula services, midwifery clinic services, and remote/online case management and psychotherapy services for about 40 women, with many services being provided for up to 18 months.

Grant Status:

As the program was underway, goals were refined:

  • serve 8 adult Black pregnant women living in Manor with doula support

  • provide 8 adult Black women with perinatal psychotherapy access

  • engage 5 Black pregnant or parenting teens with education and support

Black Mamas ATX met several challenges, including leadership transitions and access to parenting teens. They pivoted and modified services and even forged an unexpected partnership with CommUnity Care Clinic in Manor that helped them serve Manor clients. By completion of the grant term, Black Mamas served 8 Black women in Manor with doula support and 11 clients total with psychotherapy, three of whom live in Manor. Only one teen was engaged, but she did not complete their program. Black Mamas created educational collateral, formed relationships with Manor stakeholders, and participated in numerous community events so that their services were recognized.
