Project Title:

Empowerment and Life Skills Classes for Single Moms

Project Description:

Jeremiah Program helps transform families from poverty to prosperity two generations at a time. The nonprofit provides single mothers and their preschool-aged children with safe affordable housing, support for college, high-quality early childhood education, empowerment and life skills classes, all within a supportive community on the Jeremiah Program campus.

The grant will support empowerment and life skills classes, which aim to build confidence, competence, and community among young single mothers in Austin. The life skills curriculum is offered on a rotating calendar which runs26 weeks a year and focuses on Health & Wellness; Financial Literacy; Parenting & Child Development; and Career Development & Education.

Grant Status:

During the grant period, 46 single mothers and their children lived on campus. Of these, 23 moms completed Jeremiah Program’s pre-requisite/signature Empowerment Class, and 9 graduated from the program. In 2020, Jeremiah Program served 35 mothers and 130 individuals total.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, Jeremiah Program pivoted its programming. Virtual Life Skills classes were added, including health and wellness, financial literacy, and career development. In fact, virtual programming that was developed during the pandemic has paved the way for growth as a scalable solution, reaching non-resident families with services. Grant funding from Impact Austin supported reliable internet and computers, plus housing support.

Jeremiah Program credits the Impact Austin grant with catalyzing support from other local funders, and their annual grant funding doubled.
